Jewish New Year, or Rosh Hashanah is celebrated in the Autumn, September or early October time and is a 2 day celebration to mark the creation of Adam and Eve.

This is a time for reflection, a time of remembrance of our past deeds and the good things that God has done for us in that year. The festivities include prayer at the synagogue with additional readings of piyyutim (religious poems) and listening to the Shofar (a hollowed out ram's horn), that is blown during prayer.

The first day of Rosh Hashanah is 1st of Tishrei, the Babylonian name for the first month of the civil year in the Hebrew calendar. Tishrei is the 7thmonth of the ecclesiastical year. The final day is Yom Kippur, the day of atonement.

Rosh Hashanah 2023 is from Sunset on 6th September and ending nightfall on 8th September

It is traditional during this holiday to eat Challah bread dipped in honey and sprinkled with raising and also apples dipped in honey, which is a symbol of a sweet new year, pomegranates, to symbolize a fruitful life, and in some customs, the head of a fish to symbolize that we will be the head (top) and not the tail (bottom) in the coming year and the greeting Shanah Tovah have a good year spoken.

Many refrain from eating nuts, and sharp tasting foods to avoid a bitter new year.   Rosh Hashana and the week following is collectively known as the 10 days of repentance - Aseret Ymei Teshuvah, awaiting the day of Atonement, also known as Yom Kippur. This is the time where the year past is reflected on and people repent and seek atonement before judgement is passed.
