Charleston Harbour

Charleston is one of the most popular new year's eve destinations in the south, with the famous friendly southern hospitality combined with a temperate climate and some truly exceptional new year parties, including the now iconic event on the USS Yorktown (see below for details)

Charleston is well worth a visit at any time of year, so if you're coming over the festive period there are plenty of additional attractions to keep you entertertained - top highlights include Fort Sumter,  Magnolia Plantation and Gardens, Waterfront Park and the famous 4 block city market, which will have the extra bonus of seasonal gifts and treats.

We haven't been able to find any information on new year's eve fireworks in Charleston though, so if you know differently please let us know! One thing we do know is there's a huge fireworks display in Columbia, so head there to be guaranteed some pyrotechnics!

Yorktown Countdown

Probably the most well known and sought after party in Charleston on new year's eve takes place on the USS Yorktown. moored at Patriots Point, just across the water from the Charleston CBD.

The Yorktown is totally transformed for the new year party, with 10,000 feet of heated tent space erected on the flight deck, a VIP section added and 2 stages set up in the insider airplane hangar to allow for the live music shows, along with bars and food stations. This is truly a unique new year venue!

The event takes place from 9pm until 1am and inclides a countdown and champagne toast at midnight. This is a very popular party so if you want to attend you need to secure your tickets well in advance - you can buy them online here.

The Mansion Ball

In a new event this year the creators of The Yorktown Countdown will also be rolling out another signature event, The Mansion Ball, held at The Restoration, one of the city's top boutique hotels in the heart of downtown. Marion Square Party

Elsewhere, Marion Square is the site of a family-friendly, alcohol free new year party, featuring live music, plenty of childrens entertainment, art installations and of course plenty of food and drink.

Charlelston Rose Ball

The Charleston Rose Ball is another popular event, taking place at the Johnson Hagood Stadium, home of the Citadel Bulldogs. This is an upscale event (so dress to impress!) featuring a fully stocked bar and light snacks along with great live music and DJs - online ticket sales here.

New Year Harbour Cruise

Another popular option is to spend your new year's eve on the water with a cruise on Charleston Harbour, There are several options for new year party cruises, we especially like the look of the Spirit Cruises New Year's Eve cruise with live music, bar specials and great views.

There is no shortage of places to stay in Charleston over new eyars, but it does get bust so please book in advance. Top rated hotels include the Francis Marion Hotel, Belmond Charleston Place and the Renaissance Charleston Historic District Hotel.
