New Years Eve, Capodanno, in Bologna is a stunning place to welcome in 2024. This incredible city provides a stunning backdrop for the fireworks and festivities, so if you do fancy an Italian break away, this beautiful Renaissance city is well worth the visit.

Bologna is wonderful to visit at this time of year, with impressive piazzas, the chance to peruse museums, do a spot of shopping, climb towers, walk the porticoes or just relax with some great food and wine.

The city is illuminated with fairy lights, there are buskers in the streets and Christmas trees and festive garlands are abundant around the city making for a lovely scene.

Visit the Santa Lucia Christmas Market at Chiesa dei Servi on Strada Maggiore or the other Christmas Market on Via Altabella, they are quite low key, but it's always nice to have a lookie! Chase away the chill of winter with a cup of hot chocolate while you people watch in one of the many great cafes.

Piazza Maggiore New Years Eve

The main event for New Years Eve in Bologna is on Piazza Maggiore and it will be crazy busy (well busier than usual!) as people jostle for a position to see the live entertainment and also the traditional burning of the Vecchione for the Rogo del Vecchione at the famous Vecchione Bonfire.

There is a live DJ set played from Palazzo del Podest balcony, so a great party atmosphere along with fireworks in the Piazza and throughout the city.
