Annapolis in Maryland is another of those mid-size north-eastern towns that has embraced the new year's eve tradition of the First Night celebration, offering free, family friendly public entertainment, capped off of course by the inevitable fireworks displays.
Annapolis as a new year's eve destination has increased further in recent years since the capital city of Washington DC stopped holding their annual new year fireworks display on the National Mall, as now anyone in the DC area who wants to see some new year fireworks has to travel, and with all the added historic attractions, Annapolis is a very popular choice.
There may not be fireworks in DC at new year any more but there are still plenty of parties there; so if you're interested in what's going on there check out our page here: Washington DC new year's eve
The big party is of course First night Annapolis, with the main festivities centred on Susan Campbell park at City Dock, although the afternoon children's activities, starting from around 3pm and including music and the inevitable face painting, can be found on the ball fields located Maryland Hall and the Bates Middle School, which will also host a smaller early-bird fireworks display for the kids at Weems Whalen field at 5.30pm.
The main evening's entertainment gets underway at 8pm and includes plenty of live music and dancing throughout the night.
The main fireworks display then takes place at midnight. The best viewing places to head for are Susan Campbell Park, Main Street and anywhere located to the north-east of the Severn river.
You might also like to consider a cruise on Annapolis Harbour for the very best possible views available from the water. One top option is the Annapolis New Year's Eve Fireworks Cruise on the Catherine Marie yacht, departing from City Dock and including live entertainment, drinks, snacks and dancing - get more details and book your tickets here.
If you're coming to Annapolis for new year's eve then it's almost certain it's the First Night party you're looking for, but that shouldn't exclude consideration of other available offerings, most notably the number of excellent dining options in the town, with everything available from fast food to fine dining. See the full range of Annapolis restaurants here.
We haven't been able to find much in the way of live coverage from Annapolis, although the local City TV station does have a live online stream so there's a decent chance they'll at least have highlights from Firsrt Night and especially the fireworks on there:
New year's eve in Annapolis is, as you would expect, exceptionally busy so if you're going to need a hotel then we recommend making your reservation well in advance. Top places to consider include The Westin, Crowne Plaza and the period style Historic Inns of Annapolis.
