Porto is Portugal’s second largest city and after winning the
award for European Best destination in 2014, has been attracting
more and more people to visit, and new year is a great time of year
to come and see the place for yourself.
Steeped in history and culture, this is an ideal place to come and explore and see some of the beautiful architecture, old and new, including Clerigos Church, Coliseu do Porto, Sao Joao National Theatre and Casa da Musica.
If you head to city centre (Baixa do Porto) during December, you can enjoy the Christmas lights and decorations or visit the huge Christmas tree on General Humberto Delgado Square. Go buy gifts on Santa Catarina Street and stop for a festive drink and a Bolo Rei (King cake).
If you have the time and are a book work like me, then visit Livraria Lello, one of Portugal’s oldest book stores, the interior has to be seen to be believed!
Want to get active, climb the 240 steps to the top of Torre dos Clerigos for some stunning views over Porto and on an evening visit the historic Ribeira district for some down time and just see the city come to life after dark.
But remember, when in Porto, visit one of the may port cellars and try some of the delicious fortified wines.
If you are in Porto over the new year's eve period then you must
head to the city centre, especially close to or on Avenida dos
Aliados (Aliados Avenue) where you can get in the party mood with
music, dancing and the fireworks show at midnight. There will be
thousands of people gathering here to welcome in the New Year.
The hotels, restaurants, clubs and bars in Porto will have their own New Years Eve offerings, with special menus, gala dinners, and parties. As Porto gets incredibly busy at this time of year, you will want to make sure you make your reservations well in advance.
There are also New Years Eve river cruises for those who want to dine on board, open a bottle of champagne and see the fireworks from the water.
Porto has a fabulous selection of restaurants for you to dine at while you are visiting, here are just a few:
Essencia Restaurante Vegetariano
Ode Porto Wine House
There is a live webcam although it does go in and out of focus, but some parts are very clear:
Stay in some of the most beautiful hotels Porto has to offer, but
