Columbus, the state capital of Ohio, is another of the US northern cities to engage in the tradition of a family friendly First Night celebration for New Years Eve.
Although representing only the third largest land area of all of Ohio's cities (behind Cleveland and Cincinnati), Columbus likes to throw a party befitting its status and draw large numbers of visitors fron around the surrounding areas to join in the festivities.
Some of the city's major landmarks are The Ohio Statehouse in Capitol Square, the LeVeque Tower, downtown, the Franklin Park Conservatory in Franklin Park and the Replica of Christopher Columbus's ship, The Santa Maria, moored on the downtown riverfront, and these locations all attract many visitors over the holiday period and help make a visit to the city over the festive season very much worthwhile.
The big event is the First Night party, which gets underway from 5pm in the evening in downtown Columbus and offers a great range of entertainment throughout the day and evening, including street performers, live music and of course a spectacular fireworks display at midnight, launched from in front of COSI.
A First Night ticket (or to be accurate the "button" which is traditional at these events) also provides access to some of the best local attractions; Columbia Gas, The Supreme Court Building and the Ohio Department of Employment Services will all be holding special events on the day to help mark the occasion.
The city's bars and nightclubs provide plenty of entertainment options for a younger crowd too - top events to look out for include the now famous Til The Ball Falls Bar Crawl, The Werks New Years Eve at Newport Music Hall and The Bluestone NYE 2017.
The Bluestone party is one of the most popular in Columbus. There is also an after party for those who really want to make a night of it! Tickets are available online here.
For your new year dining options then there is no shortage of choices is Columbus too. There are special new years eve events and menus available at Barcelona Restaurant & Bar, Ella Restaurant, Mitchell's Steakhouse, McCormick & Schmick's Seafood and many more - see the full range of options here.
Places to watch live online - not a brilliant selection here I'm afraid, but you should be able to catch some views of the fireworks on the Earthcam feed in particular:
Columbus has no shortage of places to stay, with all budgets adequately catered for, although as always over the holiday period reservation is strongly recommended. Check availability and make your booking for local hotels here.
