Cheyenne on new year's eve is all about the ball drop party, with crowds gathering in the city's central Depot Square for a party that lasts throughout the day and then continues on in the area's many bars, hotels and restaurants well into the early hours of new year's day.
Cheyenne isn't a place you might ordinarily associate with a big new year event but the ball drop here has been taking place for several years and continues to grow in popularity, with crowds of thousands braving the cold to see in the new year in style.
There are plenty of attractions to keep you occupied if you are spending some time here over the holidays, the famous Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum in particular is well worth a look.
The big new year event in Cheyenne is of course the ball drop. The ball drop itself takes place at midnight on the Cheyenne Depot Plaza and is the culmination of a whole day of entertainment that gets underway at 3pm in the afternoon with a variety of activities for the kids and continues throughout the evening.
The children's party takes place inside the Depot itself and includes game sand activities while outside you can enjoy horse carriage rides or ice skaing on the plaza. There is a 6pm ball drop and fireworks show for the families with younger kids.
Then during the evening head into the Cheyenne Depot for the Wild Wild West New Year's Party, starting at 9pm and offering food, drink, music and dancing with a live DJ. Then the crowds will head outside shorty before midnight for the ball drop, from it's position 75 feet above the plaza, accompanied by more live music and of course the traditional Auld Lang Syne.
