Brisbane on new year's eve makes for a great party, this often uner appreciated Australian city living up to it's position as the state capital of Queensland by throwing a great range of parties, added to of course by some spectacular fireworks displays, centred mainly along the banks of the Brisbane river.
I have to be honest if I was in this part of the world for new year's eve I would be tempted to take the short trip down the coast to the Gold Coast, and Surfers Paradise in particular - check out the full range of parties taking place in Surfers this year here.
If you do decide to stay in Brisbane though you won't be disappointed, with plenty on offer to see in the new year in style.
The big new year party in Brisbane takes place on the banks of the eponymous Brisbane river, where the South Bank Fireworks represent a spectacular start to 2018. Similar to other Australian cities there are actually 2 displays, and earlier show for families at 8.30pm, followed by the main event at midnight.
The biggest crowds are obviously at the South bank itself, but many people also choose to head for the Eagle Street Pier, where there is a wide selection of river-facing restaurants with great views of the river and Story Bridge.
If you're looking for a party as well as fireworks views, then the Summer Nights NYE 2018 Ball at Riverlife Brisbane is an enduringly popular event, with live music and plentiful food and drinks - the party here continues until well after midnight.
A little further afield, the RNA Showgrounds are hosting the Brisbane New Years Eve Ball, an annual charity fundraising event that has been taking place since 1992 and has a different theme each year - dress is black tie, although the theme also encourages fancy dress, which adds to the colour of the occasion. The event also include food, drink and entertainment.
For those looking for somewhere to eat, either as part of a quiet evening or as a prelude to hitting the town, then Brisbane has plenty to choose from - top rated eateries include Azafran Restaurant, Reserve Restaurant Milton, Zafron and The Spice Avenue Balti. Top veggie option looks to be vegan joint Vege Rama. See the full range of local restaurants here.
Places to watch live online - there are a few live webcams in the area where you might catch a glimpse of the fireworks, including one ideally positioned on the South Bank:
It is the middle of summer in Queensland remember, and the Brisbane hotels book up quickly so you need to get your booking in well in advance, especially if you're keen on a city centre location with fireworks views.
Hotels recommended for the best views of the fireworks include:
Stamford Plaza (river facing rooms)
Oaks Casino Towers (especially the upper floors)
